As the rain hammers down on the streets and buildings of tropical Cairns it was once again time to visit master printer Theo Tremblay in his print workshop Editions Tremblay NFP (no fixed press) at Canopy Artspace.

The quality of work developing in this region of Northern Australia is remarkable, a relatively new media for its artists, but steeped in the region’s ancient traditions and skills.

The work created here, destined for public galleries and private collections around the world. One such work by Alick Tipoti, an eight metre long print, Girelal, was printed for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) for the 2012 Biennale of Sydney.

Master printer Theo Tremblay talks about his role in the development of printmaking in North Queensland.

“I wanted to know more about the Indigenous population of Australia”.

As art history tells its story in Cairns in the early 2000s, two things had converged, a creative explosion of Indigenous print making and the development of world class print workshops. These were Editions Tremblay NFP at Canopy Artspace and Djumbunji Press, KickArts.

Artist printmakers that worked with Editions Tremblay NFP in the period included Aboriginal and Zenadh Kes artist. There was a coming together of skilled artists engaging in both creative and technical discussions with their master printmaker. The list of famous names is long but includes Zenadth Kes artists Alick Tipoti, Brian Robinson, Dennis Nona, Glen Mackie and Billy Missi.
