Our perceptions of art, how we think about art in one place, may be different to how we think about it in another. What art is telling us may also be different from one place to another, it may also be the same.

Concerns about human rights and environment are now universal themes. What SB2013 does is to provide a snapshot of a region, revealing in a point of time, the histories, spiritualities, cultures and contemporary concerns of a vibrant and culturally diverse part of our world, which are still, if not more, relevant today.

To provide some focus for discussion about the wide-ranging SB2013 we decided to direct our attention this year on the art of two great art producing nations of the region, Indonesia and the Philippines.

With this in mind we caught up with Tan Siuli (SAM curator for Indonesia) and Joyce Toh (SAM curator for Philippines) during the closing stages of the event.

In the film Siuli and Joyce share their extensive knowledge of the art and artists participating in SB2013 as they reflect on the event and the art of Indonesia and the Philippines.

If the world changed was the fourth edition of the Singapore Biennale (SB2013). SB2013 was opened by Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Lawrence Wong on 26 October 2013. The event continued until 16 February 2014. SB2013 was held in multiple locations including the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), SAM at 8Q, National Museum of Singapore, Peranakan Museum, Singapore Management University, Waterloo Centre, National Library Building, Fort Canning Park and Our Museum @ Taman Jurong.

We would like to thank SAM and it’s staff, curators Tan Siulu and Joyce Toh, as well as Natalie Tan for organising our discussion and a very special thanks to our artist friends in Indonesia and the Philippines.
