We begin at the installation of Stephen's latest exhibition at Niagara Galleries in Melbourne - Stephen Benwell: Ceramics and Paintings 2019.
Stephen Benwell A still life is the first of two films that document Stephen’s life as an artist-potter.
In this first film Stephen discusses the ideas and philosophies that have made him among the most significant artists working with ceramics today. There is also a journey to new media and new ways of communicating art.
“I had an inspiration in Paris and I have the drawing of the idea. I came home with this one image in my head. I think the idea was at least partly a response to Meissen figurines – those bright spots of colour on the statue are taken from the candy colours of Meissen. It is also a theatrical fantasy of 18th century decorative arts”. Stephen Benwell
“Stephen is a thoughtful artist. He thinks a lot about his life, about what made him an artist and about art – his own and others, contemporary and historical”. John McPhee
“I have known Stephen for many years so we have followed the development of his art since the early days. In 2009 Creative cowboy films completed the documentary Gwyn Hanssen Pigott a potters film, which in 2010 won the award for the best contemporary art film in Montpellier, France for that year. Just like our long friendship with Gwyn, we have wanted to develop a project with Stephen for many years. The chance came in 2019. In A still life, we commence work with Stephen as he begins the move to a new studio working space and a set of new ideas”. Andrea Hylands
The second of two films about the Australian artist potter Stephen Benwell, this film was released in May 2019.
An award winning documentary about ceramic artist Gwyn Hanssen Pigott.
In this film we join sculptor William Eicholtz on a journey of creativity. The journey is contemporary but reflecting ancient techniques as William creates an important and complex work, full of skill and meaning.
